WHO WE AREJOHN BRUHL - FOUNDER / CRAFTSMANWoodworking traces back three generations on both sides of my family; my grandfathers and great-grandfathers all had careers as woodworkers, whether a furniture-factory worker in Indiana, a millworker in SE Missouri or a carpenter/home-builder. It is something deeply ingrained into the history of our family and I cannot shake the passion to create timeless and long-lasting quality furniture, cabinetry and other architectural elements. It is an indescribable feeling to have such a strong connection to my past ancestry and I work intentionally to not take that for granted each day I have in this trade. During summers between my semesters at Minneapolis College of Art and Design I further developed my traditional skill set and deepened the family connection to this craft while cutting timber frame homes alongside my Uncle. Today, I continue my family's legacy of craft through Design Made Industries.
While I feel it is important to maintain the history and understanding of traditional woodworking techniques, it is equally important for the future of craft to integrate modern advances in machinery and technology. |
